Relationship & Life Transitions  ·  California Telehealth

Same patterns, different relationship? Let’s understand why.

Whether you’re in the middle of a breakup, a big transition, or a relationship dynamic you keep repeating, therapy can help you see the pattern clearly and practice doing it differently, for yourself or together as a couple. You’ll come out the other side with more clarity about who you are and what you want.

Some seasons of life just need a guide.

Not every reason to start therapy fits neatly into a diagnosis. Sometimes life just hands you something overwhelming — a divorce, a breakup, a job loss, the death of someone you loved — and you need a space to process it with someone trained to help.

Relationship challenges are especially common: patterns that repeat across partnerships, difficulty communicating needs, managing conflict, recovering after betrayal, or figuring out your attachment style and why it keeps showing up the same way.

Life transitions can be planned — a new career, a move, retirement — or completely unexpected. Either way, they tend to destabilize our sense of identity and meaning. Therapy helps you find solid ground again.

This might be right for you if…

  • You’ve noticed the same patterns repeating in your relationships
  • You’re grieving a relationship ending: a breakup, divorce, or estrangement
  • You’re dealing with a major life change — career, parenthood, relocation, loss
  • You’re processing grief after the death of someone close to you
  • You’re at a crossroads and feeling stuck about what comes next
  • You want to understand your attachment style and how it shapes your relationships
  • You feel lonely even when you’re surrounded by people
  • You and your partner want to break a cycle together (couples welcome)
  • You’re ready to try new skills between sessions, not just talk things through

More than just talking it through.

Life transitions and relationship challenges can feel like they just need someone to listen. And while that matters, the most effective therapy also helps you develop new skills, understand your patterns, and make genuine changes — not just feel temporarily better in the session.

Your therapist receives close supervision from a licensed supervisor who helps ensure your treatment stays focused on what’s actually helping. We track your progress each session so you can see when things are shifting — and know when to adjust.

“The goal isn’t to help you survive the transition. It’s to help you move through it — and discover who you are on the other side.”

Approaches used

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) — building a life aligned with your values
  • Attachment-focused therapy — understanding your relational patterns
  • Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) — navigating relationship roles and transitions
  • Grief-informed approaches — making space for loss without getting stuck
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) — addressing the thoughts that keep you stuck
  • Measurement-Based Care — tracking progress from session one

What to Expect

What your first month looks like.

Everyone’s path is a little different, but you’ll never have to wonder where things are headed. Here’s what most people can expect when they start with Attune.

Your first session

Getting to know you

We’ll talk through what’s been going on, what you’ve already tried, and what you’d love to feel different. Together, you’ll land on a few goals that really matter to you.

Sessions 2 and 3

Building your toolkit

Your therapist starts sharing practical tools that fit your goals, like ways to quiet an overthinking spiral or approach a hard conversation, and you’ll try them out between sessions.

Around session 4

Looking back together

You’ll pause to look at what’s shifting, including the short check-ins you fill out along the way, and adjust the plan so it keeps working for you.

From there

Building momentum

Many people start to feel a real difference somewhere between sessions 4 and 6. You’ll keep meeting weekly, and can move to every other week once things feel steadier.

Relationships and life transitions, answered.

Do I need to be in a relationship to work on relationship patterns in therapy?

No. Individual therapy is one of the most effective places to understand relationship patterns, attachment style, communication habits, how you handle conflict, even without your partner present. Many clients do this work individually and see real changes in their relationships as a result.

Is it normal to seek therapy for a life transition rather than a diagnosable condition?

Yes. This is one of the most common reasons people start therapy. You don’t need a clinical diagnosis to benefit from support; a divorce, career change, relocation, or loss can be destabilizing enough on its own to warrant dedicated support.

How can therapy help with grief specifically?

Grief-informed therapy doesn’t try to help you “get over” a loss on a timeline. Instead, it creates space to process the loss, understand how it’s affecting your daily life, and find ways to carry it forward without getting stuck. Approaches like Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can also help you rebuild a life aligned with your values alongside the grief, rather than waiting for it to resolve first.
