What We Treat
Trauma can stem from a single overwhelming experience — an accident, assault, or sudden loss. It can also develop over time from repeated experiences of harm, neglect, or chronic stress. Both forms are real, and both are treatable.
When the nervous system stays stuck in a threat response — replaying the past, bracing for danger, going numb — that’s trauma. PTSD is a specific clinical diagnosis, but many people carry trauma that affects their daily lives without meeting full PTSD criteria. We work with both.
Our therapists are trained in trauma-focused approaches that go beyond talking about what happened — they help your nervous system process and integrate the experience so it no longer holds the same power.
Our Approach
Trauma-informed care means more than being gentle about difficult topics. It means using specific, evidence-based treatments designed for trauma — approaches the research shows actually produce change, not just symptom management.
At Attune, your therapist receives structured clinical supervision after every session. This is especially important for trauma work, where the supervisor helps ensure the treatment is tailored appropriately to your history and paced in a way that supports genuine healing rather than retraumatization.
“Good trauma therapy isn’t just about creating safety in the room. It’s about helping the nervous system finally let go of what it no longer needs to carry.”

PTSD is a specific clinical diagnosis with defined criteria. Trauma is broader. It describes the lasting impact of overwhelming or harmful experiences on the nervous system, whether or not someone meets full criteria for PTSD. Many people carry the effects of trauma without a formal diagnosis, and that impact is still real and treatable.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured therapy approach that helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories so they carry less emotional charge. Attune therapists use EMDR-informed approaches alongside other trauma-focused treatments like Prolonged Exposure and Cognitive Processing Therapy, matched to what fits your history and goals.
Not necessarily, and not right away. Trauma-focused treatment is paced deliberately. Your therapist won’t push you to relive details before you’re ready, and some approaches, like somatic and body-based techniques, work with how trauma shows up in the body rather than requiring you to narrate the event in detail.
It depends on the nature of the trauma and your goals, but many structured trauma-focused approaches, like Prolonged Exposure or Cognitive Processing Therapy, are often completed within roughly 12-16 sessions. More complex or long-standing trauma may take longer. Your therapist and supervisor will help pace treatment appropriately rather than rushing it.
